Weekend Assignment

Weekend Assignment #62: Hairstyles from Hell

Johns Scalzi's Journal

This is an easy one, anything I did to my hair in the 80's aka "Big Hair era" They say a picture is worth a thousand words.......... Normally I am 5 foot even but on this particular hair day I do believe I made it up to at least 5 foot 9 inches............I can hear the snickering all the way over here! lol lol lol

OK DISCLAIMER- For those few idiots that are commenting without reading the entry, that picture was taken in the 1980's THAT IS NOT HOW I WEAR MY HAIR NOW. You IDIOTS know who you are, but then again that mightbe debatable!

Lucky you .....My hair is so straight and fine, I never could get that  "balloonified " look !!  So.... all through the eighties, I looked hopelessly seventies.   Maybe it was just as well ... this looks much better on you than it would have on me.....you look good in it !! Tina

But that was the style then and you look beautiful in it. Be careful what you say that style may come back again. Paula

i remember those days with the hair.. we would use so much hair spray that if you sat a brick on your head & then removed it, your hair would look the same.. those were the days... thanx for the walk down memory lane :)

My hair was like yours ,Only I am 5'8" , Imagine my height, I was a little over 6",
I loved the style, and I stayed in a time warp for a few years afterwards,I wish it would come back, and I believe it is on the way.  Fuclosia,

It's funny when we look back at our older pictures with the hairstyles and clothes we wore, but honestly the styles seem to come back! The way the young women are dressing now with faded low cut bell bottom jeans, and and flowery tops bell sleeves looks like the seventies again. Only wish I could wear those clothes again! LOL  By the way, I wanted to tell you that you look a lot like a friend of mine named Tammy who moved away to NJ from Chicago, IL long ago. You are a pretty woman no matter what style your hair is in and I can tell you have a great personality for being able to laugh at yourself.  Thanks for making my day start with a smile!

And now your big hair is famous!  Hehehehehe!  By the way, when I was younger that was a style I would have loved to have sported, but didn't have the patience or know how to accomplish.  It really did look good on you.

The 80's were the best times of my life.  The music, the clothes, the HAIR!  God, I miss those days!  I think I'll go out and get a PERM!!!!

I agree with most all other comments...you looked great during the 80's, it was the style of the times all over the country. I too had a 'do like yours but maybe not as high and I thought I was tres chic! Let's hear it for 1985 and the tribute to the music, the hair....rock on

I think you look great.  I LOVE big hair.  I had big hair in the 60's and when the hippies came in in the 70's alll my friends went long and straight and I stayed with big hair and I still have BIG Hair.  I've  changed  styles but its still big.     adsce51@aol.com

Your hair looked fine for that era.  Actually pretty tame compared to some.  I'm just wondering why no one has commented on that HORRIBLE top you were wearing!!!  Whew!  LOL...all bright red & silk...and those shoulder pads!!  I can totally handle the big-hair thing coming back into style...but pleeeease....no shoulder pads!!!!!!!   LOL

Guess I show my age,,I like your hair,, you look great in the pic!

Anonymous said...

People still say i have a " lions Mane" lol due to always having so much hair on my head. I figured if the hair was big,,,,it would take away looking at my body,,lol

Anonymous said...

That is the worst style i have ever seen. Try and so something a little more modern

Anonymous said...

its whatever you want remeber that. well your hair does look way out there but its sexy

A lady I worked with had hair like yours and one day she was standing below a balcony of a bldg. Someone accidently dropped a cigarette and it landed in her hair. It smoldered for almost 5 minutes before she could get it out of her bee-hive hairdo. finally had to pour a bucket of water on her head to put the fire out.

That hair style probably wasent that bad in the 80's to people but get a life this is 2005 not 1980!!!

Anonymous said...

how can we ever forget the big hair days. I myself had big hair in the 80's. if you did not have big hair in the 80's you just weren't cool.

Oh my God, I can remember, getting up early to wash, mouse and gel my hair to get it into place and as high as possible. Really don't wanna do that again! Today my hair is long and natural with no foreign objects in it other that the odd hair accessory to pin it up.

Anonymous said...

i think the big hair was cool todays hair styles are just lame its like every wants to be blonde and have straight hair atleast then your hair mattered

Some things do come back! :) Remember the original Star Wars trilogy? Now we got the next (or previous) Star Wars trilogy. Duran Duran's back and as good as ever! U2's as big as they've ever been. Teen movies are back in like the Ringwold movies we grew up with. "Does Barry Manilow know that you raid his wardrobe?" (Breakfast Club) I see Ms. Pac-Man coming back at many of the arcades. And are you guys watching "Hit Me One More Time"? It was funny to watch a grown-up "mall queen" Tiffany singing "I Think We're Alone Now" and a hair-thinning Flock of Seagulls (famous FOR their hair) singing "I Ran". It's great to see younger kids enjoying the music we grew up with. Love the hair! ;>

Ahhhh... Class of "85... I loved the hair.  Gawd it took so long to get ready everyday... An hour on my hair!!  But it was fabulous, just like yours was.  Great pic, btw.... You really have it flipped up there pretty good!  Thanks for trek down memory lane... Loved the 80's!  A decade of decadence, over indulgence, materialism, and just plain party till your pants disappear.... BRING BACK THE 80's !!  LOLOLOLOLOL

Wow!  you really were a fan of hair products weren't you!  I can only imagine all the stuff you used to get your hair like that-  how do i know?  MY HAIR WAS VERY SIMILAR!!  hahahaa!  Except mine looked much more like Peg Bundy's from Married With Children.  I thought I looked excellent.  Would go through one bottle a week, sometimes more, of cheap hairspray (cheaper kinds worked better than the expensive kinds, more sticky!) and also gel, mousse, holding the hair dryer at the roots and then spraying, to get it to stay there... and THEN when I got to SCHOOL, i'd go in the bathroom and spray it some MORE!  And-  I wasn't alone- there'd be 12 other girls in there doing the same damn thing!!  LOL
And don't forget the makeup too.  FULL FACE of makeup just to go to math class.  Insane.  :)  Thanks for the memory!  LOL

MINE WAS THE SAME!!!  A little RAVE or AQUA NET (well a lot) and anyone who knew how to tease could have big hair.  It did look great on you though, better than it did on myself thats for sure.  I agree, it will come back and I can't wait!  You are brave putting your picture up like this.  Thanks for the flashback, I needed a laugh!

Does anyone remember how much Salon Selective shampoo it'd take to wash the layer of product out of your hair before you could start it all over? I remember mastering the ability to hang my head upside down and hold the can so it could still spray and them quickly grab my pick and try to feather it up as much as possible. This allowed for a less ratted look, still just as big.
Hair to the Trailer Dusters!!!

Thanks for the great photo!! you knew how to do it right!

I REMEMBER TRYING SO HARD TO HAVE THE "BIG HAIR" LOOK WHEN I WAS A TEEN IN THE 1980s. BUT NO MATTER WHAT I DID I COULD NOT DO IT RIGHT. SO I WASTED 5 OR 6 BOTTLES OF HAIRSPRAY AND NOT TO MENTION PUTTING MY OWN HEAD THROUGH TORTURE JUST TO LOOK COOL.
I AM SO GLAD THAT THE BIG HAIR IS OUT NOW WE CAN SAVE THE MONEY THAT WOULD BE SPENT ON HAIRSPRAY AND USE IT TO PAY FOR THE OUTRAGEOUS GAS PRICES AT THE PUMP!

I used to do the same thing to my  hair.  It was big and fluffy, but now I don't have any hair.  I shave my head completely bald.  The 80's were great!  heheeh.
