Petition to stop drive through Mastectomies

Having had my left breast removed on August 16, 2006 due to Cancer, I can personally attest to the need for quality health care given to Women who will be walking down the same path I am finding my way through. I have recently discovered this insane practice of what they are calling "Drive Through Mastectomies" where Women are being forced to leave within hours of having a Mastectomy............I find this appalling! I hope you do too!

Please visit this link to learn more about it and see the faces of people who are taking up this fight for Women...... Please sign the petition to help urge Congress to pass the bipartisan Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2005 (S 910/HR1849).

I am still feeling pretty good following my 3rd chemo treatment, my cheeks are becoming flushed which means the fatigue will be setting in sometime today so it's back to bed I go....I do believe drinking the water helps a great deal in how I feel following the chemo (learned my lesson! lol).......Gatorade also makes a water called "Propel" that is fortified with vitamins plus calcium.....at it's FLAVORED........I'm liking the berry flavor (comes in lemon too) and when you have to drink 64 ounces of fluid a day this makes it a hell of a lot easier! lol lol lol

That is a horror the whole drive-thru practices they are doing with many major surgeries, mastectomies, hysterectomies, all of them. They want the whole 24 hour turn-over and it's insane but it's due to HMO's and insurance coverage who do not want to provide the proper recovery time and then you have the hospitals, which are all about making money and well if they can't get it from your insurance than they are giving you the boot out the door long before you are ready to be able to care for yourself.  It's a barbaric practice.  I will definitely go sign the petition.  You're very right about Propel, that stuff is great and if I must drink water you better believe mines flavored, lol.  I hope recover quickly with this round!  Love ya! Leave hospital within 24 hours of a major operation? Somebody should re-read their Hippocratic oath (the one you swear as a doctor), not to do harm. That is criminal.

I haven't tried the propel waters yet (but will now since you reccomended it), but I did find that I really like the Dasani Lemon water. I usually don't like the flavored waters (they taste like watered down koolaid <g>), but I really like the Dasani Lemon... tastes like the Lemon shakeups you get at a State Fair.

The 'Drive-Thru' practice has become more and more prevalent in medicine as a whole. It's a shame.

Signed the petition I do find it awful, it makes us worse than a third world country in our treatment of women....I had breast surgery when I was 18, scared to death, turned out to be a very large benign tumor...they kept me in the hospital for seven days.  I still felt like crap when I got out and still couldn't use my left arm had to use a sling.  So how do they come up with cut it out and drive away? idiots, morons and few other choice words.  Sandi

It is imperative that the surgeons also participate in campaigning against these drive-through mastectomies. If enough of them would group together to fight the insurance companies' totally insane practice of forcing mastectomy patients out of the hospital so quickly, the impact would be even stronger. I know my OB/GYN discussed with me the drive-through deliveries, and he attended a huge conference to push for insurance companies to cease making immediate releases standard. And it worked. Doctors AND patients must work together to stop these outrageous rules that are dictated to them by health insurance groups.

Still keeping you in my prayers, and I am pleased you are tolerating the chemo so well. You are a trooper. God bless you.

I've found that Doctors and Hospitals don't know what in the world they are doing. I've never had anything dealing with breast cancer :: knock on wood:: but I've had other medical things that have been just as bad.   Having a breast removed is a major surgery. It affects not only physical but psychological and emotional aspects of a person that need rest too... How can you rest at home while worrying about your health... At least in the hospital you have someone monitoring your healing process and can act quickly if for some reason something goes wrong... No matter how well a surgery goes, complications can always crop up...

Keep up the positiveness! And smile no matter how yucky you feel... It might just make you feel better :)  Twinkle Dreams!

Will go and sign the petition.  I am hooked on the Propel water especially black cherry.  That's all I drink.  Water will help flush your system while going thru the chemo.  Have a great day.
Hugs,
Dana

I'm not really a "plain water" person myself, Kim.  Thanks for the heads-up on the Propel.  I will have to try it!

Hope you're having a great day!

Love,
Sheila

I received a forward about the Mastectomy bill from a friend in Ohio.  Get this, I was in and out of the hospital in 20 hours!  I was so pissed at the nurses aide, she was trying to get me dressed before they took the IV out!  Hadn't even seen my Dr.!  no problem signing the petition.
